Looking after our skin as we age
Protect your skin from the sun
Sun protection should be an essential part of your routine to avoid skin damage from harmful UV rays. As well as applying SPF 30 or higher (even on cloudy days), seek shade where possible, and use wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses which offer UV protection.
Eat a balanced, nutritious diet
Research suggests that a diet high in sugar or other refined carbohydrates can accelerate skin ageing, so make sure you’re getting your 5-a-day and eating a balanced diet to supply the skin with all the nutrients it needs.
Stay on top of regular exercise
Moderate exercise can improve circulation and boost the immune system, which may give the skin a more youthful appearance. Building exercise into your lifestyle is a great habit to form, so why not ditch the car and take a brisk walk to the shops instead?
Don’t neglect your cleansing routine
A gentle cleansing routine at the start and end of each day can remove make-up, pollution and other unwanted substances without irritating your skin.
Don’t smoke
This is a big one – smoking can accelerate ageing by speeding up the destruction of collagen and elastin, encouraging wrinkles and giving the skin a sallow appearance.
Watch your alcohol intake
Alcohol can dehydrate the skin, which can lead to dryness. Excessive drinking over time can exacerbate redness and conditions such as rosacea.
