Men’s Club Championship

Shane Lowry

What an amazing weekend for golf! Northern Ireland did an amazing job hosting the 148th Open Championship and what a worthy winner!

Shane Lowry showed us all what he was made of with an outstanding performance. Congratulations to him and the Island of Ireland for a fantastic week. We look forward to welcoming the Open back to Kent at Royal St Georges Golf Club in Sandwich.

More importantly we held our Men’s Club Championships this weekend which unlike the Open, went right down to the wire, with three of our members all closing to within a shot or two of each other throughout the back 9.

Simon Jones shot an impressive round of 72 on Saturday in the driving range to lead the field by 3 shots over Phil Abbott who shot a 75. Sunday brought perfect conditions to the relief of the field whose clubs were still drying as they arrived at the first tee!

It was a special experience for me doing the starting on the Sunday. Some very unique swings and some interesting positions to watch some if our members play their second shots. I’m talking about you Blanchard!

Our leading group included Anthony Clines (+5) Phil Abbott (+3) & Simon Jones (Level). All were safely away of the 1st and it was game on.

Things certainly began heating up when the scores began rolling in after 12 holes. Simon had dropped a couple of shots making him +2 for the tournament, Phil was 1 under par and also +2 for the tournament, and Anthony was -2 for his round, making him only 1 shot back.

All three dropped another shot through 15 but Anthony unfortunately dropped another two on 16 meaning it was a two horse race playing 17. Simon holed out for Par but Phil missed his par putting Simon 1 shot ahead playing the 18th.

As the word got back to the club, members began spilling out of the bar, to watch the drama unfold on the final hole. The golfing gods were smiling on Simon’s tee shot as it sailed over the tree on the right of the 18th and found a perfect lie on the 17th tee. Phil played safe, taking an iron off the tee, but left himself with plenty to do with over 200 yards left into the green. Unfortunately, his approach shot found the right hand green side bunker and Simon managed to pitch his 3rd to around 20 feet. Phil splashed out of the bunker to 4 feet and Simon two putted, meaning Phil had a 4 footer to take it to extra holes.

Phil took his stroke and missed on the left hand side, making Simon Jones our 2019 Men’s Club Champion!

Congratulations Simon on an impressive win!

Another big well done to Max Hall who blitz the field in the nett competition. Max finished an amazing -10, winning by 6 shots over Jack Cuthbertson who was closely followed by Dave Heffer on -3. Congratulations Max!
