Last week we welcomed 160 of the most talented Junior Golfers from the UK and Europe for the 21st annual Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters.
The course was in fantastic shape, and really became the talking point for the competitors and spectators.
Although perfect scoring condition greeted the boys and girls on Friday, the field seemed to struggle. In fact, only our tournament favourite Ben Schmidt managed to make the most of the weather, shooting an amazing 6 under par 66.
The girls also struggled, with only 1 shot separating the leader Darcy Harry with the rest of the field.
Saturday got off to a slow start, with a 30-minute fog delay, however soon they were off and running, and this time the boys weren’t messing around!
As the live scores started coming in, it was clear one player was completing a very special round. Aamed Saleem matches his four under par front 9, with a four under back 9, completing an amazing 8 under par 64, one shot off our course record and safely on top of the leaderboard.
Sunday consisted of 36 holes, a tough test of mental and physical endurance for the 42 boys and 10 girls who made it through the cut. Unfortunately, our 36-hole leader Saleem couldn’t replicate his 2nd round form, giving shots back to the field, eventually being overtaken by Schmidt who stayed consistent with a 1 under par 71.
Our girls were also jostling for the top spot with Ffion Tynan taking charge, making it her tournament to lose. Tynan seems to relish the pressure staying cool and collected throughout the round, winning by an amazing 5 shots.
Kent golfer Jacob Kelso became Ben’s closest rival getting to 5 under for the tournament, however Schmidt responded with birdies and 10, 12 & 13, eventually winning by 5 strokes.
Tito Triana, Nizels PGA Professional and Golf Operations Manager said:
“The course was in fantastic condition and the greens were running very fast. It was great to see the sun was shining on Kent replacing the much-needed rain that we have experienced in the last few weeks. We are so grateful to the 70 plus volunteers from Nizels and from the local area who came to support the tournament by ball spotting, scoring, marshalling and ensuring that the tournament was ready each day. Our volunteers are all keen golfers from Kent and come out to support potential future champions.
Martyn Taylor, Tournament Director said:
“I am very happy that the tournament, which is now in its 21st year, has yet again been a great success. The standard of golf was incredibly high so congratulations to all the players and many thanks to all those involved that have made this tournament one to remember.”
Competitors were supported by their family and friends as well as members of Nizels and local golfers who came to enjoy the day and watch the exceptional golf.
The Junior Masters is recognised by Golf England as one of the leading Junior tournaments Next year the event will be held between 19 – 21 June 2020.
