The Summer golfing season is now firmly underway, and it’s been a mixed bag of weather so far; we have had some really nice sunny days and there has also been some very heavy rain. Usually I would be cursing the rain but this year I have been happy to see it as it as because in conjunction with the over seeding and fertilising we have carried out, it has helped to almost 90% fill in all the areas that have been affected by the leather jacket.
I am writing this the day after the Junior Masters tournament has finished and I can tell you that Nizels is in fantastic condition, the greens are running fast and true and were stimping at 11.3 on the final day. I would like to say a great big well done to all of my team, the other greenkeepers from some of our other courses that came to help, and Tito and the rest of the clubhouse staff that made for the smooth running over the three days.
Going forward, we will over the next couple of months, be doing our best to keep the course in great condition as well as carrying out a few little jobs here and there; mainly clearing out the ditches and repairing a couple of irrigation leeks on the 1st and the 15th.
Finally, we welcome a new Deputy Course Manager starting on 22nd July. His name is John Shepherd (no relation) and he joins us with a wealth of knowledge and experience after spending 26 years as Head Greenkeeper at Piltdown GC. Please give him a big friendly Nizels welcome when you see him.
